Looking for the Golden Eagle Feb 3

Deana and are on the marsh at Tantramar. Light snow. Looking for Golden Eagle. Saw it at a distance yesterday but missed a golden opportunity at a very good look others had nearby. :(.

Northern Cardinal

I had a very good opportunity recently to photograph this female Northern Cardinal. We have seen her at our feeders and in the garden for the last two months but she has been very shy. During the recent cold period she may have been more anxious to eat and so, came closer to the house. It’s hard to take just one photo. There are more at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDJ6RFT .Northern Cardinal (female)

UP-Date: Still appearing daily as of Jan 31st 2013. (Original Post November 26, 2012). Has endured temperatures of -20+ with wind chill -30+. Seems to be doing fine. Eating peanuts, black oil sunflowers seeds and some mixed seeds.

This bird has been around for the last few days. Is it possible its the same one who was here last spring and the spring before that?

(Lone) Pine Grosbeak

This bird came by our feeders this afternoon. It was difficult to catch it clearly in the setting sunlight!
Photo opportunities were not perfect, still a treat to have it drop by. Pine Grosbeaks are rare visitors to
our feeders although we have had small flocks in the past.

In some photos a seed shell gives it a cross bill appearance.

Rare birds

We’ve been sharing a cardinal pair with Anne Assaff (our near neighbour) the last couple of days. Today I spotted a lone Evening Grosbeak at our feeders-in the 80’s we would have dozens of them and could go through bags of sunflower seeds a season- so hoping to see some more but not too many- Deana

Bouctouche Dune Walk

On Sunday Morning Deana and I did the 12 km Bouctouche Dune walk with about 100 others (another group went in the afternoon). We saw a few birds, only one butterfly! (a cabbage White) . There are some photos on Flickr at Flickr Photos Bouctouche Dune Walk . We saw a Jaeger, photo included, if anyone can tell us which one it is we would appreciate it. Peter  (Up date – Jaeger it turns out has been identified as an immature gull! 😦  ).

Wildlife – Bay of Fundy

Some of the species seen over the long weekend. If you hover over the thumbnail, it shows my best guess for identification of the seabirds, but I would appreciate any corrections or precise names. Thanks.

What the Banded Garden Spider had for Supper

As I walked along the banks of the Cains River this afternoon looking fo butterflies I found only one, other than Cabbage Whites and clouded Sulphurs. It was not long for this world I’m afraid. http://youtu.be/2MrnKd1lTWE

Sandhill Cranes in Millerton

I was walking along a logging road off Highway 8 in the Millerton area watching 3 Viceroy butterflies working out their relationship

when there was a great “shreak” from abou 100 meters away in the underbrush. These two flew up and around giving me enough time

to come to my senses and take a few distant photos! One never knows!
