Why I am Glad My Neighbour Doesn’t Pick Apples

My next door neighbour, Manford Wasson, called me this afternoon to alert me about an attack on his apples that were still on the tree!

It was a wonderful opportunity … one I have wanted for some time …. I am going back tomorrow so may have more to add!

(AS if 43 photos isn’t enough!)

Northumberland County Winter Bird List

From: David McLeod [mailto:mcleodda@nbnet.nb.ca]
Sent: February-05-15 3:33 AM
Subject: Northumberland County Winter Bird List

Hi Everyone:

Hurrah!! We have broken the 2011-12 winter bird list record of 61. The number now stands at 65.

Since the last update, we added White-winged Crossbill (#61), Barred Owl (#62), Northern Shrike (#63), Hoary Redpoll (#64), and Northern Goshawk (#65). Refer to attached list for details, but note that the species have been placed in taxonomic order in the list and so the above numbers will not be the same as in the list. I’ve also attached two photos: one of the Barred Owl taken by Paul Connell and the other of the Northern Shrike capturing a Pine Siskin by Isaie Comeau.

We still have over three weeks yet to add to the list. Several species that have not been reported this year but were on last year’s list are still good possibilities. They include Merlin, Great Horned Owl, Boreal Chickadee, and Red Crossbill. Others, like Song Sparrow and White-throated Sparrow, could be hanging around feeders somewhere. Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs could be in flocks of Snow Buntings, or a Cedar Waxwing could be found in a flock of Bohemian Waxwings, so it would be worth a closer look in such cases.

Thanks to all for the reports.

Dave

Any additional reports for either count day or count period would be most welcome.

Winter Bird List for Northumberland County

Begin forwarded message:

From: “David McLeod” <mcleodda>
Date: December 1, 2014 at 1:47:07 PM AST
Subject: Winter Bird List for Northumberland County

Hi Everyone:

The winter bird list for Northumberland County starts today, Dec. 1, and lasts for three winter months until Feb. 28, 2015.

All club members and others are encouraged to take part during this period and report any new sightings within the county to me by email at mcleodda or by phone at 506-776-3426. I’ll try to send out an updated list every two weeks, so everyone can see what species we still need.

In 2011-12 we had a record year of 61 species. We fell 2 species short last year (2013-14) with a total of 59 species which I’ve reproduced HERE for future reference.

Dave
