A Large Work Party of Northern Shovelers!

I visited the Chatham Head water treatment lagoon area today hoping to find some butterflies. (Not to be I’m afraid) There were many ducks in the upper lagoon and I couldn’t see any in the lower one. However, although I saw American Widgeons, Hooded Mergansers, Ring-necks by far the most common were Northern Shovelers. Forty-nine flew off as they became aware of me but I should think another 20 or more remained on the far side. I have never seen more than three of these ducks in one place before!
