Horned Larks on Kelly’s Beach, Kouchibouguac N. P.

We saw three Horned Larks at Kouchibouguac N. P. this afternoon. It is not a bird I have seen often. Leonel would see them near the runway of Miramichi Airport I know. Deana observed that the Horned Lark, although not all that common, can potentially be seen just about anywhere in Canada, the exception being northern Ellesmere Island. In some parts of Canada it would only be seen in migration. We also saw a Great Blue Heron, 3 ruffed Grouse and one Spruce Grouse, all along the side of the park road. Peter

Our Bird Feeding Experiences

Deana and I were asked to do a presentation about birds at the Newcastle-Miramichi Public Library. Attached here is a pdf version of the slides we use for this presentation given on November 12, 2014.  As it is the time of year with winter approaching and we start paying a lot of attention to our bird feeders, we thought we would base the presentation on our experiences with backyard birds in the winter months. A Large Work Party of Northern Shovelers!

I visited the Chatham Head water treatment lagoon area today hoping to find some butterflies. (Not to be I’m afraid) There were many ducks in the upper lagoon and I couldn’t see any in the lower one. However, although I saw American Widgeons, Hooded Mergansers, Ring-necks by far the most common were Northern Shovelers. Forty-nine flew off as they became aware of me but I should think another 20 or more remained on the far side. I have never seen more than three of these ducks in one place before!

Butterflies Getting Harder to Spot

As September comes to an end, it is harder to find butterflies “on the wing” (other than Cabbage Whites and Clouded Sulphurs). These Pecks Skippers were seen near Camp Sheldrake on Saturday. These are members of the second generation for 2014 and the first time I’ve seen them this late in the season.

(A collection  of butterfly photos, still a work in progress, from this season at  https://flic.kr/s/aHsk2E4zE5  )

Barred Owl

We were snowshoeing in Barnaby today (Feb 18) and my Mom spotted this Barred Owl high up in a cedar. It didn’t seem to mind our presence, just closed its eyes and appeared to be snoozing.
